How does a diaphragm pump work?

How exactly does a diaphragm pump work? A pneumatic diaphragm pump is a versatile and reliable pump that uses diaphragms that move back and forth to create a pumping action. A diaphragm creates a temporary chamber where liquids are sucked in and then pushed further. This is why diaphragm pumps are also often referred to as positive displacement pumps. The membranes within the pump housing act as a partition between the air and the liquid, resulting in two separate chambers.

The diaphragm pump has inlet and outlet valves that control the flow of liquid through the pump. The air valve in the center of the pump directs the compressed air to the back of the first diaphragm, moving it away from the center block. This is called a suction stroke. The air is now forced out of the pump through the outlet behind the second diaphragm. This then raises the plunger and draws the liquid into the chamber, which is called the discharge stroke. After the discharge stroke, the diaphragm pump reverses its motion and starts another suction stroke, repeating the cycle.

What are diaphragm pumps used for?

Diaphragm pumps are valued for their ability to handle a wide range of fluids, including abrasive and viscous substances. Their robust design and ability to run dry make them a preferred choice for many applications in which fluids are handled. These pumps are especially suitable for compounding configurations of the following difficult liquids:

  • Corrosive chemicals
  • Lubricants
  • Volatile solvents
  • Viscous or sticky liquids
  • Shear sensitive foods and pharmaceuticals
  • Dirty water and abrasive slurries
  • Smaller solids
  • Creams, gels and oils
